Becoming a Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas Foster Home

Newly Retired Greyhounds Arriving!  There are more retirees than ever as the greyhound racing industry continues to rapidly downsize and our foster homes are full. Would you please consider adopting another hound or offering to foster/babysit a homeless hound? Training, guidance, and support are provided.

Thank you for carefully considering participation in our Greyhound Foster Program. Foster homes are the backbone of our adoption group, and are still badly needed. Families who will open their homes to a new greyhound and provide training and socialization are the heart of our program and are crucial to the adoption process. Foster "parents" provide temporary, loving care for greyhounds until they are on their way to new lives. The rewards of fostering a new greyhound cannot be adequately explained in words, and the effort isn't all that taxing. This is truly an opportunity for you to save a life.  Preparing a greyhound for its' forever home is vital to the success of a permanent placement.

If you live in Southern Nevada and would like to foster, please consider fostering at least once a year, to begin a sweet greyhound along on their journey to a permanent, loving home. We will provide training and support and hope to make your fostering experience a rewarding one. We hope that you enjoy teaching your foster how to retire to a life as a lovable, loyal, well-behaved family pet.

What is Fostering?

An ex-racing greyhound usually between 2-6 years old, enters your life for a few weeks…usually for 4-8 weeks, although some dogs have been in foster care for longer or shorter periods of time.
As a Foster Parent, you are responsible for teaching your foster greyhound:

• Housebreaking
• Walking on a leash
• Responding to his/her name
• Appropriate behavior indoors – and outdoors
• Proper interaction with other pets
• Playing with children and adults

Your foster’s personality will slowly develop and bloom and we ask that you observe and record their developing personality, likes and dislikes so that this may be shared with their new family. You will also be taking your foster to medical appointments and to meet and greets.

We fully understand that foster parents have it tough, because giving up a dog they have nurtured is very emotional, even when they love the new owners and home the greyhound will have.  Your anxiety over "Failing Fostering" and being unable to let your foster dog go, will hopefully be alleviated after you have fostered a hound or two and you have known the joy of your foster having found their very own carefully selected home. Also, knowing that you can help another hound waiting for your foster care will help ease the loss. Volunteers are only a phone call or e-mail away if you have questions, need advice or emotional support.

Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas has a special "Permanent Foster Home Program" for senior greyhounds (usually age 12 or older) that have not been able to find an adoptive home due to the costs associated with adopting a senior pet. Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas will pay for all of the senior greyhound's medical needs, food and supplies for the rest of their lives & Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas retains "ownership" of the senior dog. Permanent Foster parents provide a loving, nurturing home for the rest of the dog's life. They coordinate with Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas to take their foster to a Greyhound Pet Adoption Las Vegas participating vet to have medical needs performed whenever necessary.

Please complete the Foster Home Application if you are ready to have a deeply enriching experience.
